Sunday 7 December 2025
Leader: Patrick Liss
Twelve keen trampers gathered at the Whareroa Farm carpark on a warm Sunday morning. It was very encouraging that nine of the group hadn’t previously climbed Mt. Wainui, and seven were prospective club members.
We began the day with a solid climb up to The Rocks lookout. We were in cloud before we got to the lookout so there were none of the usual views. We climbed the gate into Wainui Farm, having been given permission by the owner. From there a short walk through a pine forest took us up to Campbell's Mill Road. We then walked along the road for 30-40 minutes before heading up a newly bulldozed track, over a fence and into the bush.
A steady climb for about one and a half hours up a rather slippery track in the native bush had us on the top of Mt Wainui. Again, low cloud obscured all of the usual panoramic views, so we just had to use our imaginations!
After a rest and some lunch, we slipped and slithered back down, dropping below the cloud base as we emerged from the bush. We walked back to The Rocks and made our way back to the carpark via the Ramaroa Valley. The return trip took us about 8 hours. I hope the prospective members weren’t put off by the lack of panoramic views and are still keen to join the Parawais!
Those on the trip were:
Brian Law, Mark Robertson, Patrick Liss, Rodney Hopkirk, Craig Watkin, Brian Edwards, Shauna Powell, Julie Goundar, Andrew Slack, Allison Slack, Petr Kure, Richard Potts
Currently there is no photo album for this trip.
