Leader: Peter Davis
Fourteen of us set off with a little despondency towards low, dark, rain-filled skies over the south.
Incredibly, umbrellas were not needed as the most we suffered all day was a little shower. After some car shuffling we set off from the Bus Barn carpark at the south end of Muritai Road, and up well-made, gentle zig zags with great views of the harbour and cloud-covered Wellington on the far side.
We picked up the Butterfly Creek track, walking through some gorgeous stream-side bush, and at some point continued on the main ridge track which we followed until the end.
The route was a narrow tramping track in parts but easy to follow, well signed and soft underfoot, going up and over a few mini-summits including Kaeaea summit, Lowry Lookout and Hawtrey Trig, and finally down the Cheviot Road track to the cars.
There were occasional splendid views over the water and into the lush regenerating bush eastwards. Side hustles/escape routes down to the cafés of Eastbourne and Days Bay were nobly resisted.
It took us longer and resulted in sorer feet than expected, to do the 13km, and during more car shuffling at the end, some of us were happy to cool off legs at the waterfront in Lowry Bay. Great day had by all.
Those on the trip were:
Chris Keating, Glenda Robb, John Glover, Julia Morrice, Kevin Sheppard, Marian Cox, Mark Robertson, Owen Cox, Pam Glover, Patrick Liss, Peter Davis, Sandra Rowland, Shauna Powell, Tony Quayle
