6-7 September 2025
Leader: Owen Cox
The weather forecast wasn’t very flash Saturday, so three of us headed down over the Remutaka Hill towards Palliser Bay. When we reached Cape Palliser, a cold southerly with showers greeted us, so we chose to stay at Mangatoetoe Hut, which looked a better bet than camping beyond the stonewall.
First, we did a quick walk to the stonewall and the waterfall on Waitetuna Stream. It started raining with a strong tailwind en route, so when we arrived at the stream we were soaked. Fortunately, the rain stopped, and after looking around we headed back to the cape. By the time we returned we had dried out.
After a quick trip up the stairs to the lighthouse we drove back to Mangatoetoe Stream. It was then ‘pack on’ to head up the stream. We found that there is more scrub in the stream bed and the old vehicle tracks were overgrown. We followed the stream and then, about halfway up, a newly cut track with orange markers to the hut. We settled in just after 4pm, collecting a bit of wood to make a fire.
On Sunday morning it looked like the start of a beautiful day, so we headed off back to the car expecting to do few side trips. However, as we headed down, the cloud grew and as we reached the car it started raining heavily. The rain continued as we drove past Ngawi. In view of the poor weather, we decided on an inside lunch at Lake Ferry instead of taking any side trips. So, we were home early.
Those on the trip were:
