Leader: John Glover
Four club members and one guest met at 9 am at the farm and enjoyed a beautiful winter's day walk.
We began by taking the Te Ara Ramaroa Track to The Rocks. Ably led by Owen, we were soon passing through the Ramaroa Bush where the ground was strewn with white kohekohe petals, no doubt the result of recent winds. Many kohekohe trees still had blossom sprouting from their trunks and branches.
Emerging from the bush, we followed the stream up the valley until we came to the broad vehicle track. Following this, we arrived at The Rocks around 10:30. We snacked and made the most of this first opportunity to take in the fantastic view.
We next headed to the Catchment View Track, spotting a good sampling of fungus along the way. Not far from the top of the track, we found a picnic table - perfect for an early lunch and more relaxing views. There were only a few distant clouds and virtually no wind to spoil our day.
Around midday we descended to the valley floor and looked for another area to explore. The Western Hills Track was suggested, so we headed there, first using the Mamaku Track. First an easy, short, valley walk, this soon morphed into a steeper zig-zag path that took us to the top and, would you believe, another stunning view from the Coastal Lookout.
Yet more admiring comments were made on the view of Kapiti in front of us. Yet more snacks were consumed. And yet again, finally, it was time to walk on, this time back to the carpark. We'd covered a fair bit of the farm. And had we enjoyed it? You bet!
