Thirteen people met at Whareroa Farm car park at 8:30. It was a grey day and quite windy, and the wind was quite cold, but all the uphill walking warmed us up quickly. After a steady one hour climb in the paddocks we reached the Rocks and waited in the shelter of the pine trees for everyone to gather and had our first morning tea. Second morning tea was an hour later after more climbing through pine forest. We gathered for a group photo.

Fourteen of us set off with a little despondency towards low, dark, rain-filled skies over the south.

The plan was for 11 of us to head into the Ruahines for a two day tramp heading up the Tamaki River West Branch to Cattle Creek Hut. The weather intervened.

There were five of us on the trip, which made the logistics nice and easy. All but one of us were carrying a tent so if we got to the hut and found it full, John was going to be in the hut regardless, even if that meant sleeping on the floor. Otherwise he would have had to share with Maryann as she was the only one carrying a two person tent.

We went to Methven on Sunday 13th September, hoping to get five days of midweek skiing at Mt Hutt. Optimistically, we all had 5 day passes! We were so lucky and had five great days' skiing.

Day 1. Friday
We left Wellington out of the fog on Friday night on Air New Zealand to Auckland. It just happened to be a happy hour flight and luckily for us it was the only flight out that evening.

We all met up at Maymorn Station on a gorgeous, cold blue-sky winter's morning. We were feeling so lucky after a really cold week.
