Parawai Tramping Club

Waiopehu Hut Tramp

11-12 October 2025

Leader: Paula Richardson

The weather forecast for this trip was for heavy rain and strong winds in the ranges. However, given that there were no rivers to cross, that we would be below the bushline for most of the trip, and that we could potentially bag the first two peaks for the Parawai Tramping Club 30 peaks and 30 rivers challenge, I decided that we would give it a go!

Twin Peak (1097 m)

We met at Poads Road End in wet and windy conditions. We ALMOST went home there and then, but made the most of a brief decrease in rain to head off into the bush. Once we got underway, conditions weren’t too bad. We decided to split into two groups so that the two fast trampers didn’t have to wait in the heavy rain for the two not-so-fast plodders, meeting up again at the hut. It really wasn’t too bad once we got going!

By the time Julie and I got to the hut, Rob and Jacqui had changed into warm dry clothing. However, we still had the peaks to bag! We decided it was better to knock off the two peaks that day, as the next day’s weather could be worse. Rob gallantly put his wet gear back on and came with Julie and me to bag Waiopehu Peak (1094 m) and Twin Peak (1097 m).

We had a nice night in the hut, with no other trampers or hunters present. Weather conditions the next day remained wet and windy, so we headed back out to Poads Road via the same route.

Those on the trip were:
