Leader: Patrick Liss

Twelve of us met at the Camp Elsdon road end on a beautiful winter’s day.

Porirua Harbour with the Tararua Range in the distance

We walked up the Rangituhi Track which is a long (over 6 kms), but gentle ascent avoiding the more challenging 700 steps of the old route. We had a break at the lookout and had great views out to the ocean and the hills to the north-east including Mounts Wainui and Kapakapanui. The Southern Crossing was also very clear with a nice new coating of snow.

We had another pause at the top of Colonial Knob, enjoying more great views. Mt Tapuae-O-Ueneku was the standout, with the sun shining off the snow covering. We continued down towards the Spicer Forest then found a nice sunny lunch spot sheltered from the cold breeze.

From here it was a quick descent down the 6 Pines Track, past the old Porirua reservoir and out to Raiha Street and back to the carpark. We met at the Peppermill Café for coffee before heading back home.

Those on the trip were:

Brian Solomon, Chris Keating, Glenda Robb, John Glover, Marian Cox, Maryann Bugg, Owen Cox, Patrick Liss, Tony Quayle, Viv Roberts, Yingjun Shelton, Brian Law
