Back in March, when we last visited the giant rata tree, several members were disappointed it clashed with their being away on South Island tramping trips. The perfect excuse to do it again, and with significantly greater numbers: 21, up from 8 in March.

On the Friday morning of our new Matariki public holiday (yahoo - another long weekend for tramping trips!) we all set out for the Timber Trail, an 82km bike trail in the Pureora Forest.

Following the almost compulsory coffee stop we arrived at the road end to be greeted by a sign board saying 2 1/5 hours to our destination. Great, a nice easy trip, so on that thought we started off into a typical Tararua trip. Steeply up one side then down the other with very little flat land in between, before arriving 4 hours later. Whoever put up that sign board got it wrong.

I love the Kaweka Range, it is always a nice change from the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges where we do the bulk of our North Island tramping.

This was a trip using public transport. We got off the train at Ngaio and then walked up for morning coffee at the local café. After that we wandered down and followed a short stretch of footpath to Trelissick Park.

This trip was a hut check and spruce up for Parawai Lodge at Otaki Forks.

Captain James Cook charted the New Zealand Coast as part of his 1768-1771 expedition to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun. He named this island Great Barrier in 1769 for the shelter and protection it provides to the Hauraki Gulf from the Pacific Ocean.
