Over a lovely long weekend in February four of us being Cathy, Brandon, Kate and myself headed down to Picton on the Thursday afternoon Interislander sailing from Wellington for the annual club kayak trip around the Marlborough Sounds.

Right from the start our plan to circuit the tops from Rogue Ridge, over Kaweka Junction to Back Ridge and Kiwi Mouth then travel the river to Kuripapango was looking dubious, with significant rainfall forecast from Sunday afternoon. What we hadn’t expected was being battered by strong westerlies above Studholme Saddle on Saturday.

Since farming operations ceased in Queen Elizabeth Park several years ago, new tracks have opened up, wetlands have been restored and fences have been gradually removed. This walk was a chance to explore new tracks and trails in areas not previously open to the public.
Leader: Peter Davis
Six of us met up at the Hacket Picnic Area, outside of Richmond, for a four-day adventure in the Pelorus Valley.

We met up just before 10am at the fantastic Clareville Café. (Highly recommended! First time for me and I was so impressed).

Perfect weather and a team of 14 assembled at Kiwi Ranch, and left at 9.20am.

This trip was meant to be on 1 January but we put it off a day because the river was very high on New Years Eve. It was still a bit big on 1 January (60 cumecs early in the day, dropping to around 40 late in the afternoon). At this level the river is not really suitable for inner tubes and swimming.
